“I don’t even go to a church if they don’t have a website” Nadine K.
It’s an honest comment that accurately represents the attitude of the church seeking digital generation. The phrase “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” could easily be applied in a new way to the web world. “don’t judge an organization by it’s website“.
But the reality is the digital generation is looking for a church or organization that utilizes digital resources to connect and share information. This is more than just shading service times, addresses, contact info, mission and belief statements. An effective site could be using calenders that synchronize with their computers, phones, mp3 players. Having downloadable sermons and videos. Releasing sermon notes and questions that can help facilitate individual devotional times or group discussions. Videos or articles about upcoming sermons or studies and why they should partake in the community (The City). Online church services (Life Church). Outreach that takes place on social networking sites like facebook, twitter, myspace.
The web is booming with social tools to connect people and their lives. We loose something if we fail to realize the biggest socially transforming event, Christ life, death and resurrection, can also transform and utilize the social features of the web.
We’re looking at a generation that may never step into the front doors of your church or ministry because you didn’t understand that their front doors aren’t physically attached to your building.
